Hi, I'm Jessica. I'm a therapist at Foundations Family Therapy in Fuquay-Varina.

A Beautiful Mess

Whether you’re a new mom, a seasoned mom or hoping to be a mom, this season of life is beautiful and messy.  While it is immensely rewarding it can also be filled with anticipation, worry, doubt, loneliness, and guilt.

Maybe you’re longing for the chaos that comes with being a mom.  You hear other moms complaining about how tough it is, and you’re thinking “I'd give anything to have those struggles”.   All of your friends, and their friends, and the person you just met at the store, are all having babies and you’re struggling with getting or staying pregnant. You have constant questions in your mind: “Is it me, is it him, is it something we’re doing or not doing?”

You’re happy for your friends, but you’re struggling with grief and jealousy. You’re feeling deflated, hopeless and defeated.

Maybe you’re juggling a career with being a mom and a wife and you’re thinking, “How do other moms do it all?” You’re just trying to get that “balance” in life that everyone speaks of.  You’re beginning to wonder if “work/life balance” is really a unicorn that no one has actually found yet, but somehow is still searching for and feels like it must be just beyond the horizon.  Some days go pretty well, and you think “I'm killing it at this mom thing”, other days you’re preschooler shows up to school with their pants on backwards and you spill your coffee running into the meeting that you’re now late for.

Mommin’ Ain’t Easy!  It’s physically, emotionally and spiritually trying and draining.

You’re surviving, you’re getting by every day, but you keep thinking “somethings gotta give, it's got to get better than this”.

I hear you!  I see you! You are not alone!

Feeling Like You’re “Never Enough”

Those old thoughts of “you’re not enough, you can’t handle this” start to creep back into your mind and the doubts set in. Then the guilt comes and before you know it, you’re a heap of tears on the steering wheel of your minivan.

You’ve been so busy caring for everyone else, that you’ve forgotten who you are in the process. You feel like everything and everyone says, “You’re not enough,” because everyone else seems like they can handle it (at least that's what it looks like on their social media feed). These thoughts are lies, and you’ve believed them for far too long.

Sure, you’re overwhelmed, you’re frustrated, you’re struggling—but you are enough!

Struggling With Feelings of Anger, Sadness or Worry

Anger is your go-to emotional reaction. It comes out of nowhere even if the situation doesn't command such a strong response. You lost your temper with your child again; you snapped at your spouse; you yelled at your mom when she called to see how your day was.

You finally lay down at night, and everyone's sound asleep, but not you—you’re laying in bed with guilt and worry racing through your mind. “I shouldn't have yelled at her like that; I hope she knows how much I care”; “I need to tell him I’m sorry for snapping at him; it’s not his fault”, “Mom barely checks in and when she does, I treat her badly—I’m awful.”

These thoughts are on constant repeat, until you finally toss and turn enough and out of sheer exhaustion you fall asleep.

You’re Not Defined By Your Emotions

As powerful as they may feel, your emotions don't define you. You may react with anger, and feel lonely and helpless, but that's not who you are. You are strong, you have a purpose. You are smart and creative and capable; you are enough.

If you’re struggling with identifying your emotions and gaining power over your responses, counseling may help you find freedom. Gain back control and handle stress in an effective way with more energy. Deal with feelings of guilt and overcome shame to live the life you were created for.

Find hope again, learn to take care of yourself so you can take care of others. Believe that you are enough and you’ve got this!  You don’t have to continue just getting by day to day, you can move from surviving to thriving.

If you’re struggling and ready to take control of your emotions, I hear you and I would love to walk with you on this journey. Give me a call and let's set up a time to meet.

Responding to Feelings of Grief in the Midst of COVID-19

April 17, 2020

Grief can be a natural response to what’s happening in our world right now. There’s a shift and a sense of loss for the ways things were. We’re preparing for how things may have to be. Life as we know it looks very different as we “social distance” ourselves and many of our expectations and…
