Getting Our Youngest Clients the Help They Need
We know that every person has different needs when it comes to therapy. We also know that children have a specific and special type of need when entering the therapy room. Counseling can be scary, intimidating, and uncomfortable for adults and children during the first few visits. We understand that children have different ways of communicating and processing information. Children communicate through play! Play and toys are the languages of children.
Is your child struggling with transitions? Are they resisting school or other experiences? Has your child experienced a traumatic event? Has your child been through a separation/divorce? Did your child recently get a scary diagnosis or lose someone close to them? Play therapy can help!

Symptoms of Anxiety and Depression in Children
Every child’s experience with anxiety or depression can look different. But, here are a few things we hear in our offices from our youngest clients.
- Irritability, anger, or aggression
- Somatic complaints such as stomach aches, headaches, or body pains
- Changes in personality. This may include increased sadness, withdrawal from others, lack of interest in previously enjoyed activities
- Nightmares or changes in sleeping patterns
- Excessive attachment to parents and trouble with changes
Play Therapy can Help Your Child Smile Again!
All of our child therapists incorporate play into their sessions. Play is the primary way that young children learn, grow and engage in their world. This may look like unstructured play, where they have access to work out experiences and feelings through play with toys, dressup clothes, a sand tray, doll house and play kitchen. This could also mean incorporating structured play where the therapist brings in a game or actvity that is more directed. Art, and other sensory items are often also used to help engage the child in the therapuetic process.
